Towards the end of 2009, Google announced that the speed of web page loading was likely to become a scoring factor in the search engine's ranking of pages - the slower a page was to load, the more negative impact it could have on your page's ability to rank well.
There's been a lot of discussion since then as to how important this is going to be, and recently on Google's YouTube Webmaster Central Channel, Matt explains how relevant page speed might be compared to other factors:

Denis Hope Ltd, a long-established Rochdale Town Centre business specialising in quality designer menswear and suit hire recently launched their brand new website. Established since 1959, Denis Hope have been bringing designer clothing to the North West's discerning fashion conscious, and have now extended their service to include eCommerce, allowing customers to purchase their favourite designer labels online, with a choice of home delivery or in-store collection.
Featuring a stylish contemporary design, the eCommerce aspect of the new website, launched in late December 2009, has comprehensive men's and women's clothing sections, allowing customers to locate their target products by a wide range of selection criteria, and to view high-definition quality images before purchase. A handy pop-up size guide is a useful addition to each product display page.
Running a busy high-street outlet means there are limited resources to allocate to updating and maintaining a complex shopping website, so the eCommerce product catalogue and content management system were developed from the ground up to be simple to use, yet effective and efficient.
Customers can sign up to Denis Hope's mailing list to remain informed of upcoming offers and special promotions, and there is also a frequently updated blog to keep website visitors informed of the latest Denis Hope developments and fashion industry news.
The site also details Denis Hope's suit hire department, with downloadable brochures and price lists for that special occasion.
